- La dracontologie est une science nouvelle dont l'origine remonte à 1985 seulement. Il s'agit d'une branche de la cryptozoologie: l'étude des animaux cachés.le terme de dracontologie est un néologisme de bon aloi accepté par l'Office de la langue française du gouvernement du Québec le 3 décembre 1984. L'Office a reconnu la base logique de la création de ce mot nouveau suggéré par M. Jacques Boisvert, président de la Société d'histoire du lac Memphrémagog et créé par un moine bénédictin vivant sur les rives du lac Memphrémagog, mais qui désire garder l'anonymat conformément à sa vocation religieuse.

Le mot "Dracontologie" est formé de l'élément grec "Drakon " qui signifie: dragon, animal fabuleux; et de l'élément grec "logia ": étude méthodique. On peut aussi retrouver la racine grecque: "Derkomaï ", fixer du regard, observer attentivement. Le terme Dracontologie s'applique désormais à l'étude scientifique et mythique des créatures lacustres (unidentified lake dwelling creatures) comme Memphré, du lac Memphrémagog,d'Ogopogo du lac Okanagan, Colombie Britannique et Nessie du Loch-Ness (Écosse)» Ce toponyme a été accepté par le Docteur Bermard Heuvelmans, fondateur de la CRYPOTOZOOLOGIE.

When I did begin researching the lake Memphremagog sea serpent I was in contact with a monk at the Benedictine Abbey of St-Benoît-du-Lac on the shores of Lake Memphremagog. I knew that the science that deals with the study of phenomenon of hidden animals was named CRYPTOZOOLOGY but I wanted to find a word that would identify the science dealing with unidentified strange lake dwelling creatures that could live in our lakes. My friend, the Benedictine monk, a linguist, found the word :«dracontologie», which was officially accepted by l'Office de la langue française du Québec on December 3rd 1984. We did have the english toponym (DRACONTOLOGY) accepted one year later by the American HeritageDictionary in the United States. in fact dracontology is part of cryptozoology. It was the only toponym that Dr. Heuvelmans had accepted at the time.
